The Future of the North at the Heart of the Discussions at the 10th National Student Conference on Northern Students

Rouyn-Noranda, September 20, 2012 - Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) will host the 10th National Student Conference on Northern Students from November 1 to 3, 2012, at its Val-d’Or Campus. The event, under the theme “Nikan: The Future of the North”, is organized jointly with the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies (ACUNS). It is a unique opportunity for young researchers to stay abreast of the latest advances in northern studies.

Some 40 students from 25 Canadian institutions will give their views on relevant topics: Northern People, Changing North, Economy, Employment and Training, Public Health, Biophysical Environment and Natural Resources, Politics, and Northern Research. The conference will allow the participants to discuss on the future of the North in response to climate changes and key socioeconomic and geopolitical issues. “This is the first time that a ACUNS conference will concentrate so very actively on social issues related to Northern Canada development. In the current context of Northern development, it is particularly interesting to reflect on this type of challenges at a national gathering that demonstrates the diversity and extent of research being undertaken”, says Mrs. Suzy Basile, Chairperson of the Host Committee.

A rich and full agenda
The event features a number of well-known speakers, including Hugo Asselin (UQAT), Caroline Desbiens (Université Laval), Sylvie Gauthier (Canadian Forest Services, UQAM, Université Laval and UQAT), Peter Geller (Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic, University of the Fraser Valley), Audrey Giles (Ottawa University), Alain A. Grenier (ESG-UQAM), Jean-Paul Lacasse (Ottawa University), Carole Lévesque (INRS), Serge Payette (Université Laval) and Romeo Saganash (MP, Abitibi–Baie-James–Nunavik–Eeyou).

This event is made possible thanks to the support of favored partners, including Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, Government of Québec, DIALOG, and The W. Garfield Weston Foundation.
