PIWASEHA: an exceptional training opportunity for the staff of the health and social services establishments!

Val-d’Or, June 21st, 2010 – Mr. Norman Young, Grand Chief of the Algonquin Nation Programs and Services Secretariat is pleased to be associated with his various partners to reveal the PIWASEHA training project. This unique project initiated by the tribal council intends to provide the staff of the health and social services establishments with the opportunity to improve their understanding of Aboriginal culture and realities so that they may offer superior quality care services and establish a sincere partnership based on mutual respect and understanding. Approximately 480 participants throughout the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region will be reached through this 6 hour training session. Every employment level will be targeted: nurses, doctors, social workers, including administrators, secretaries, etc.

Recognized for its expertise on First Nation issues, l’Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue was selected to develop the content of this training program which was devised from the experience and suggestions of a 12 member advisory committee from various sectors (organizations and communities). These members shared their expertise and brought forth the necessary retrospective when developing the teaching material for the course. According to Mrs. Janet Mark, the PIWASEHA project trainer “This training is based on interaction, exchanges, action, reflection and fun! Along with recalling historical facts and learning current information, we will be performing several activities that will promote personal and professional awareness. Role playing situations will certainly evoke interesting and stimulating exchanges”.

In conclusion, Grand Chief Young reminds that “This innovative project is made possible thanks to the financial participation of the Aboriginal Health Transition Fund (AHTF) and the continued support of l’Agence de la santé et de services sociaux de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue. We are grateful for their encouragement”.
