Knowledge co production with Indigenous Peoples and sharing of research results at the 4th seminar on the Ethics of Research with Indigenous Peoples

On November 22 and 23, over 75 people attended the 4th Seminar on the Ethics of Research with Indigenous Peoples at the First Peoples Pavilion of the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) Val-Or campus. This event was organised by UQAT, in close collaboration with the DIALOG (Aboriginal Peoples Research and Knowledge Network).

The seminar generated stimulating discussions, created the opportunity to report on the various perspectives in research relating to Indigenous Peoples and discussed less frequent topics such as history and archaeology in the Indigenous context. The launch of the second edition of the Toolbox of research principles in an Aboriginal context: ethics, respect, fairness, reciprocity, collaboration and culture was also part of the event. This one-of-a-kind publication is the product of a partnership between the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC) and the DIALOG (Aboriginal Peoples Research and Knowledge Network). On November 22, the seminar hosted the “Bar des Sciences” segment of the Radio-Canada program Les années lumière, holding a discussion on “Indigenous science and knowledge: forced marriage or fertile union?”  

 “This seminar is a perfect example of the culture of partnership that has been UQAT’s hallmark in its 35 years of ongoing development, as also demonstrated within the six Priority Issues stated in our 2015-2020 Development Plan, notably through the reinforcement of partnerships with First Peoples. Indeed, the close relationships between UQAT and First Peoples allow to respond effectively to identified needs in the respect of their culture and specificities, both in teaching and in research”, concluded Manon Champagne, UQAT Vice-Rector for teaching, research and creation.
