UQAT creates the School of Indigenous Studies
Rouyn-Noranda, Monday June 20, 2016 – Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) consolidates its partnership with aboriginal people by creating the School of Indigenous Studies, a new department entirely dedicated to teaching and research with aboriginal people. Ratified June 14 by the University's Board of directors, the creation of the School of Indigenous Studies is in line with the strategic orientation of the 2015-2020 UQAT Development Plan aiming to set up an academic structure for developing training and research for, by and with First People.
The privileged partnership with aboriginal people has been central to UQAT's development for more than 20 years. The creation of the School of Indigenous Studies thus builds on a variety of study programs developed over the years, including pillars such as the certificate in aboriginal studies. The School of Indigenous Studies also has a mission to offer its support and expertise to UQAT's departments and services to help them include aboriginal values and realities. "The creation of the School of Indigenous Studies confirms UQAT's leadership and gives us latitude to further develop teaching at all cycles and research for, by and with our aboriginal partners", says Hugo Asselin, director of the School of Indigenous Studies and holder of the Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Forestry.
UQAT, a reference in terms of aboriginal issues
Centered on interactions between aboriginal and non-aboriginal students and professors, and fostering mutual enrichment, collaboration and stimulation, UQAT's approach has proven its value. In addition to developing bilingual study programs in respect of aboriginal perspectives, UQAT places students at the heart of its mission by offering them high-quality teaching and services, thus favoring their success.
With more than 700 diplomas awarded to aboriginal students, 2,500 persons trained on aboriginal realities in about 60 companies and organizations, and several research projects, UQAT maintains its commitment to remain a reference in terms of aboriginal issues.
