Symposium beef production in the North — Quebec-Ontario

February 7 and 8, 2018 - Convention Centre Rouyn-Noranda

Context of the Symposium

Although Northern Quebec and Northern Ontario have similar agricultural environments, cattle production has developed quite differently in both of these provinces. Forages grow well in northern climates and lower land costs allow beef cow-calf production to expand. A recent benchmark study examined how farms operate in each province by surveying over 200 producers. The symposium is an opportunity to bring together all those involved in the cattle industry and present the technical, environmental and financial results of the survey to highlight the most profitable practices for producers.

Objectives of the survey

Over 200 farms in Northern Quebec and Northern Ontario were surveyed on production practices and 30 of these were selected for a further in depth analysis.

Three objectives guided the project:

  1. Identify key performance indicators (technical, financial) that lead to business sustainability (economic, environmental and social).
  2. Determine the similarities and differences between Ontario and Quebec beef cow-calf production. Each province and industry partners will use this data to achieve their respective development goals.
  3. Foster Quebec-Ontario networks to create a dynamic and innovative climate for the development of the beef cow-calf industry in northern conditions.
